SAR team building with Surjen

Hi, my name is Surjen Magar. I was born in Nepal and was just 14 when I first came to Australia. I have being living in Tasmania for 6 years now. During this time, I have gone to high school and college in Tasmania and completed Certificate III in Individual Support (Ageing, Home and Community) through Clarence Campus. Now I am currently doing Certificate III in English at TAFE.

We got to meet with some past SAR members and learn about their experiences

I heard about the English course from my brother and friends but I was unsure about my decision to return to TAFE. Then I realised how hard it was for me to complete Cert III at college and to understand English so I thought I would give it a go.

I am learning and enjoying more at TAFE than I did at College. One of the interesting parts of our class is the Student Against Racism project. We do workshops in different places and we have a special Students Against Racism class which runs every Thursday from 12:30 to 2:30 pm.

With Lucien we had to do drama exercises with a lot of speaking. It was challenging but we had fun!.

The last two Thursday afternoons in the Student Against Racism sessions, our teacher Gini, invited Lucien to teach us some skills. He is a drama teacher and they were great sessions! He was very friendly and confident about the work he does. We played games and talked about body language and how important it is in communication. Just after two sessions with Lucien, we learned so many skills and ideas from him. We became more open with each other and now we trust each other more. We are building a strong team and we can laugh and make mistakes together.

We all enjoyed learning with Lucien and hopefully we will see each other again.

We acknowledge that we live and work on the land of the muwinina people and we pay our deepest respects

to elders past, present and future.

At SAR, we understand what it is to be removed from your homeland and we will never take opportunity to live on this beautiful land for granted.
